Solar Panel FAQs: The Essential Guide

Curious about how much you can save with solar panels? How much do they cost to install - and are they even effective in Ireland's wet climate?  Our solar panels guide answers your commonly asked questions.

Costs vary based on the system size, roof or land size and energy needs or your business, farm or home. For typical residential homes, cost ranges from €4,000 to €9,000 after SEAI grants are deducted.

While we can’t quote exact prices here, contact Solgrid for a free consultation and a custom quote.

Yes! Ireland’s climate, with its long daylight hours, is ideal for solar panels. Even on cloudy days, modern panels efficiently generate electricity, reducing your energy bills and carbon footprint.

Savings depend on your system size, energy usage, your property type and whether you have a battery installed. On average, homeowners can save as much as 70% on electricity over the year, or on average about €1,200 annually.

Solgrid is a Solar PV Specialist, and our services include:

  • Solar PV System design.
  • Grant assistance.
  • Installation of Solar PV systems, batteries, hot water kits (Eddi diverters) and EV car chargers.
  • Solar panel maintenance service.

Yes, solar panels perform well even in overcast conditions. Ireland's daylight hours provide ample energy for homes and businesses with solar panel systems. A solar panel system can save you up to 90% of your electricity bill during the summer months, and as much as 30% in winter months.

Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells. When sunlight hits the panels, it generates direct current (DC), which is then converted into usable alternating current (AC) by an inverter for your home or business.

SEAI offers a suite of grants for residential, agricultural and commercial solar installations.

SEAI Grant for Domestic Solar: currently as of January - December 2025, SEAI grants up to €1,800 are available for residential solar systems. The grants are set to reduce at the end of every calendar year by €300 per year.

SEAI Non-Domestic Micro Generation Grant (NDMG) for Commercial Solar: Currently as of January 2025, grants up to €162,600 are available for domestic solar systems. On average, this

Farms/Agricultural Solar grants can be applied for through the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme / TAMS 3 Solar Capital Investment Scheme. Grants can cover up to 60% of the cost of your solar installation, with a maximum grant of €90,000.

These amounts are subject to change and are correct at time of publication. Check with Solgrid for the latest updates.

Most solar panels come with a 25 year performance warranty. However, with proper maintenance, they can function efficiently for 30 years or more. Solgrid do offer maintenance and service plan options for your system after install.

Solar panels require minimal maintenance. Cleaning them periodically and ensuring no obstructions (like debris or overhanging branches) will keep them performing optimally and extend their life.

Solgrid offers affordable maintenance packages for ongoing support from basic cleaning and system services to premium options for larger commercial systems.

Contact us if you would like more information on our Solar PV Maintenance Service. You do not have to be a past client to avail of this service.

Yes, a Building Energy Rating (BER) Certificate is necessary if you’re applying for a SEAI Solar grant. Certification can only be carried out after your solar installation is complete - and we provide it completely free of charge.
