The increased support, available through the SEAI Non-Domestic Microgen Grant (NDMG), forms part of the Government's National Energy Affordability Taskforce measures.
With a maximum grant of €325,200 and a limited nine-month application window, the announcement represents a valuable opportunity for businesses looking to reduce electricity costs, improve energy security and invest in a more sustainable future.
Solgrid Welcomes Increased Support for Commercial Solar
At Solgrid, we welcome the Government's decision to increase financial support for businesses investing in solar energy.
Aidan Mc Curtin, General Manager of Solgrid, commented:
"With support nearly doubling from around 23% to 45% for the next nine months, the case for commercial solar has never been stronger.
For businesses planning ahead, this is a real opportunity to cut energy costs and take control of their electricity bills. Because the enhanced rate is time-limited, we'd encourage businesses to start the conversation now, before the window closes."
For many organisations, upfront investment remains a key consideration when assessing commercial solar PV. The enhanced grant reduces this initial financial commitment, potentially improving project payback periods and strengthening the long-term return on investment.
What Has Changed with the SEAI Commercial Solar Grant?
From 6 October 2026 until 6 July 2027, SEAI has increased funding under the Non-Domestic Microgen Grant scheme.
The key changes and conditions include:
Up to 45% grant support: Funding is capped at 45% of eligible invoiced costs, subject to the grant amount calculated for the system.
Maximum grant of €325,200: Available for eligible commercial solar PV installations.
Systems up to 1,000 kWp: Grant funding is calculated for solar PV capacity up to 1 MWp.
Nine-month application window: Enhanced support applies to new applications submitted between 6 October 2026 and 6 July 2027.
Existing applications excluded: Previously submitted applications cannot be increased to the enhanced grant level.
The actual grant awarded depends on the size of the proposed installation, the applicable grant calculation and the final eligible invoiced cost.
Businesses can check indicative funding using the official SEAI commercial solar grant calculator.
Who Can Apply for the Enhanced Solar Grant?
The SEAI Non-Domestic Microgen Grant supports solar PV investment across several sectors, including:
Commercial businesses, including offices, retail, manufacturing, warehousing and hospitality.
Agricultural businesses, subject to the relevant scheme conditions.
Schools and public sector organisations.
Community centres and eligible non-profit organisations.
Eligibility and grant conditions should be confirmed for each project before applying.
Why Is This a Good Time for Businesses to Consider Solar?
Electricity remains a significant operating expense for many Irish businesses. Commercial solar PV allows organisations to generate electricity on-site, reducing the amount purchased from the grid.
For businesses with substantial daytime electricity demand, a properly designed solar PV system can offer several long-term benefits.
Reduced operating costs: Generating and consuming solar electricity on-site can lower ongoing electricity expenditure.
Improved financial returns: Higher grant support reduces the initial investment required, potentially shortening the payback period.
Greater energy cost predictability: Solar PV reduces exposure to future electricity price fluctuations by providing a long-term source of on-site generation.
Sustainability benefits: Reducing dependence on grid electricity can help businesses lower their operational carbon emissions and support their environmental objectives.
However, the value of commercial solar extends beyond the grant itself. System design, electricity consumption patterns, equipment selection and installation quality all influence the long-term financial and operational performance of a solar investment.
Planning Ahead Is Essential
Although the enhanced grant window remains open until 6 July 2027, businesses should avoid leaving their planning until the final months.
Commercial solar projects require careful consideration of site suitability, electricity usage, system capacity and potential financial returns.
Importantly, SEAI requires applicants to appoint a registered solar PV company and receive their formal grant letter of offer before installation work begins.
Starting the process early allows businesses time to assess their options and prepare an application before the enhanced funding window closes.
