Rathcoffey GAA: Powering a Kildare Community Sports Club with Solar PV

For a rural GAA club, every euro spent on running facilities is money that cannot be invested in sport and the local community. Rathcoffey GAA in Co. Kildare has taken a practical step towards controlling those ongoing costs with a 44 kWp solar PV installation delivered by Solgrid.

A Club at the Heart of Rathcoffey

Founded in 1888, Rathcoffey GAA has a long history of bringing people together through Gaelic games. In a village community of approximately 400–500 people, facilities like the GAA club matter well beyond match days. Improving the long-term sustainability of the club’s operations helps protect that role for future generations.

A 44 kWp Solar PV System Designed for the Site

Solgrid supplied a 44 kWp rooftop solar PV solution, bringing together high-output panels, a commercial inverter and hot-water diversion technology. The project included support with the electrical connection application and planning-exemption process, helping the club navigate the requirements around an installation of this scale.

  • 44 kWp installed solar PV capacity
  • 72 × Jinko 615 W solar panels
  • 1 × Huawei 30 kW inverter

The installation was supported through the Green Clubs Initiative. The support helped strengthen the case for a community organisation investing in long-term energy savings.

Early Monitoring: Solar Already Making a Difference

Monitoring recorded between May and October 2026 showed that the club achieved approximately 40% electricity self-sufficiency over that period. This is a summer-to-autumn monitoring snapshot, not a full-year performance figure or an annual savings guarantee.

For Rathcoffey GAA, generating a substantial share of its electricity on site can help reduce dependence on purchased electricity and release more resources for the activities and facilities its community values.

What Rathcoffey GAA Says About Working with Solgrid

“We had an excellent experience with Solgrid from start to finish. Aidan McCurtin was extremely helpful throughout the process, supporting us with our NC7 application to the ESB and guiding us through our Section 5 planning exemption. Aidan’s knowledge and experience made what could have been a complicated process much more straightforward.
The installation itself was smooth and professionally managed, with safety clearly a top priority throughout. Matthew and the Solgrid team were knowledgeable, efficient, and took great care to ensure the work was completed to a high standard.
We’re delighted with the end result — a 44 kWp solar PV system that is now up and running and we are making huge savings on our electricity costs. Solgrid made the whole process easy and gave us confidence at every stage.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Solgrid to anyone considering a commercial solar installation. Aidan and Matthew were a pleasure to deal with, and we’re very happy with the quality of both the service and the finished installation.”

Solar PV That Supports Community Sport

The Rathcoffey GAA installation is an example of how a site-specific solar PV system can support the financial resilience of a local sports organisation. From the early-stage applications through to safe delivery and commissioning, Solgrid worked with the club to make the project straightforward and deliver a system ready to generate savings.
