Battery storage allows electricity to be stored and used later, giving households greater flexibility over how and when they use electricity. For homes with solar PV, this can help increase the amount of solar-generated electricity used within the home rather than relying on electricity from the grid at other times.
Here is what homeowners need to know about the new scheme.
How much is the battery grant?
The grant is a set €600 payment for qualifying battery systems with a capacity of 5 kWh or more.
Battery systems below 5 kWh are not eligible for the grant.
Who is eligible?
SEAI states that eligible properties can be owned by:
- Homeowners, including private landlords
- Owner Management Companies
- Approved Housing Bodies
The property must also:
- Have an MPRN
- Have been built and occupied before 2025
- Not previously have received funding for a battery at that MPRN
Can you get the battery grant with a solar PV grant?
Yes.
If you are installing solar PV and a battery system at the same time, you can apply for both grants through a single application.
If you already have an existing Solar PV Grant application and now wish to apply for the battery grant, SEAI says you do not need to amend the original solar application. Instead, you can submit a new battery grant application through the SEAI portal.
You can also apply for one measure now and the other later, provided you meet the eligibility criteria at the time of application. Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
Important: apply before installation starts
One of the most important requirements is that you must receive a Grant Offer from SEAI before the battery installation begins.
Applications cannot be accepted for installations that have already started. Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
The installation must also meet SEAI's technical requirements and must be completed by an SEAI-registered Solar PV Contractor. Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
How to apply for the SEAI battery grant
The process broadly follows these steps.
1. Choose a registered solar PV company
SEAI recommends getting quotations, checking references and ensuring you receive a written contract detailing the work, price, payment terms, warranties and timelines.
Your chosen contractor is responsible for ensuring the installation meets the required technical standards and for submitting the relevant completion documentation. Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
2. Apply to SEAI
Submit your battery grant application through the SEAI online grant portal.
You must then wait until you receive your Letter of Offer before installation begins. The contractor carrying out the work should match the company named on your Letter of Offer. Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
3. Complete the network connection process
Before installation, the installer must apply to ESB Networks to connect the battery system to the electricity network.
SEAI advises that this process typically takes at least four weeks or 20 working days. Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
4. Install the battery
Once grant approval has been received, the system can be installed.
You have eight months from grant approval to complete the works and submit the required Declaration of Works. Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
5. Arrange a post-works BER where required
If solar PV is present at the property, a post-works BER assessment is required before the battery grant can be drawn down.
This must be completed by a registered SEAI BER Assessor. Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
6. Submit the completion documentation
After installation, your solar PV company submits the required documentation to SEAI.
This includes items such as the Declaration of Works, electrical certification, ESB Networks documentation, invoice and installation photographs. Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
7. Grant payment
Once the required documentation has been received and approved, SEAI pays the grant into the nominated bank account.
SEAI advises allowing approximately four to six weeks for grant payment processing. Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
What should you consider before choosing a battery?
Battery capacity is only one part of selecting the right storage system.
The appropriate solution will depend on factors such as your electricity consumption, solar PV system size, when you use electricity, available storage capacity and how you want the battery to operate.
For homes installing solar and battery storage together, designing the two systems as part of the same overall energy solution can help ensure the battery capacity and system configuration are appropriate for the property.
