Ballinakill Community Sportsfield has taken a major step towards sustainability and financial resilience with the installation of a new solar PV system. Partnering with Solgrid, the community facility now benefits from clean renewable energy that not only lowers its environmental footprint but also delivers significant cost savings.

Key Benefits of the Solar Panel System

System Size: 4.4 kW
Solar Output: 3,797 kWh per year
Panels: 10 × 440W Jinko Solar
Inverter: Anker SOLIX Hybrid, 5 kWh
Estimated Bill Reduction: 50%+
Projected Lifetime Savings: 3× system cost
Carbon Savings: 1 ton CO₂ per year (approximately 254 trees planted)

Powering Community Facilities with Solar

Sports clubs and community facilities often face high running costs, with electricity bills being one of the biggest expenses. By switching to solar, Ballinakill Community Sportsfield is set to reduce its electricity bills by over 50% every year, ensuring that more funds can be directed back into supporting local sport and community initiatives.

A Smart Financial Investment

This solar PV project is more than just an environmental upgrade – it’s a smart investment. Over its lifetime, the system is projected to generate more than 3 times its installation cost in energy savings. With rising electricity prices, these savings will only become more valuable year after year.

To make the project even more affordable, the Non-Domestic Microgen Grant (NDMG) covered 30% of the upfront cost, enabling the club to invest in a system that will pay for itself in just over a decade and continue to deliver savings for many years after.

Environmental Impact

Beyond financial savings, the installation has a real impact on the environment. Each year, the solar system will:

  • Save 1 ton of CO₂ emissions
  • Deliver the same benefit as planting 254 trees
  • Avoid the equivalent of 39,510 car kilometres driven
  • Offset 28 long-haul flights over its 30-year lifetime

This makes Ballinakill a leader in community sustainability, setting an example for other facilities across the region.

Leading the Way for Community Facilities

For clubs, sportsfields, and community centres, solar panels are a proven way to cut costs and future-proof energy use. With funding and grant support available, coupled with long-term financial returns, the decision to go solar is no longer just an environmental choice – it’s a financial one too.

Ballinakill Community Sportsfield now stands as a shining example of how renewable energy can transform community facilities, ensuring they remain future-proofed and sustainable for generations to come.
